Apple Watch Series 12 & Ultra 4: What to Expect This Fall
September is creeping closer, and with it comes Apple’s most predictable — and most useful — annual ritual: new Apple Watches. If you’ve been eyeing a smartwatch upgrade, the next six weeks are exactly the wrong time to panic-buy. Here’s what’s coming and how to play it.
What we know so far
According to 9to5Mac, the picture shaping up looks like this:
- Apple will announce its next-generation Apple Watch lineup in September, headlined by the Series 12 and the Ultra 4
- The Series 12 is rumored to bring several new features over the Series 11
- Separately, reporting suggests a full Apple Watch redesign is likely still at least a year away — so expect refinement rather than a whole new look this cycle
My take: this is a “buy with your calendar” decision
Every year I give friends the same Apple Watch advice, and every year it holds up: never buy a current-gen Apple Watch in August. Either wait a few weeks for the new models — which launch at the same prices the old ones did — or wait for the moment the new ones are announced and grab the outgoing generation at a steep discount. Both outcomes beat paying full price for year-old hardware days before its successor appears.
The “no redesign yet” angle actually makes this an interesting year for bargain hunters. When the new generation is an iterative update, the outgoing Series 11 and Ultra 3 become phenomenal value the day after the keynote — same core experience, meaningful savings. Iteration years are deal years.
If you’re an Ultra person, the calculus tilts slightly toward waiting for the Ultra 4 itself: Ultra buyers tend to keep their watches longer, so getting the newest hardware buys you more years of software support per dollar.
Should you wait or buy now?
Wait for September if:
- You want the newest model with the longest support runway
- You’re an Ultra buyer planning to keep the watch 4+ years
- You can live with your current watch for a few more weeks
Buy after the announcement (previous gen) if:
- You want the best price-to-performance — discounts on outgoing models are usually excellent
- A redesign next year doesn’t tempt you; you just want a great watch now
Buy today only if:
- Your current watch just died and you can’t wait — in that case, hunt for an existing discount rather than paying list price
